GENMOODLE ACCOUNTS & COURSES

BETS also maintains a “general-purpose” Moodle site, known as the “gen moodle”, for use by instructors, departments, administrators, research groups, student clubs, training programs, etc.:  https://gen3moodle.bilkent.edu.tr

Request a gen3moodle Account

Anyone with an active bilkent.edu.tr domain email address can create a gen3moodle account:

  • Go to the gen3moodle login page and click the “Create New Account” button: https://gen3moodle.bilkent.edu.tr/login/index.php.
  • You will receive an authentication email from the system. Follow or copy-paste the link in the email in your web browser to activate your account. If you don’t see an email, check your spam folder.
  • Once your account is created, you can get access to a course by contacting the relevant course coordinator/instructor.

If you have another kind of email address, or experience problems, please contact moodle@bilkent.edu.tr to request a genmoodle account.

Request a gen3moodle Course

Any Bilkent staff member or student can request a personal Moodle page. Example uses of the gen3moodle include an instructor sandbox for designing new courses, a departmental information page, practice courses for student educators, an in-service training program page, a student club website, etc.

To request your course, open the course request page: https://gen3moodle.bilkent.edu.tr/course/request.php

Complete the form with the following information:

  1. desired course short name (must be different from the course full name)
  2. desired course full name (a suggested title for your course, e.g., “Jenny Smith’s sandbox” or “EEE 101 Course Resources”, etc.)
  3. any information you can provide about the course’s context, purpose, and desired functionality

Adding Users to your gen3moodle Course

You can add users who have created gen3moodle accounts (see above) in several ways:

To request bulk manual user enrolments and/or accounts for non-Bilkenters, please complete this MS Excel file (gen3-user-upload-blank) with all users’:

  • Bilkent ID (type this in “username” please)
  • Bilkent email address
  • first name
  • surname
  • department (code, e.g., FAE, CITE, etc.)
  • course enrolment (type the “course short name” as specified either above or in your course settings; must be different from the course full name)
  • role in course: student, editingteacher, or teacher (=non-editing teacher/TA)

Please email the file to Moodle support team at moodle@bilkent.edu.tr.

NOTES FOR ADMINS

During bulk uploads, to preserve Turkish characters in users’ names – ÇçĞğİɪÖöÜüŞş – the user list excel needs to be uploaded to Moodle as a Unicode text file with UTF-8 encoding. To convert the file, do the following:

  1. In MS Excel, save the spreadsheet as type “Unicode text”
  2. Open the file with Notepad (or other text editor), and click “save as”, and set the “encoding” option to UTF-8. Click save.
  3. When uploading to moodle (site administration > users > upload users) set “CSV delimiter” to /t (tab delimiter) and leave “encoding” as UTF-8 (this should be the default anyway)

To keep things organised, please move new courses from the default “miscellaneous” category and create departmental categories as necessary.
