How can I generate Turnitin reports for work submitted to a non-Turnitin-enabled assignment?

Sadly, there is no way to send already uploaded assignment submissions to the Turninitn service. Once the first student uploads their work, Moodle will no longer be able to establish a connection to Turnitin for the assignment.

Nevertheless, there are a few solutions you could try, depending on your case. Please note that Case #1, option A will be the simplest and most transparent option if the due date for the assignment has not passed or you feel you can offer a fair extension to all students.

Case #1 – You want to (i) see a Turnitin report or use the GradeMark feature for all submissions AND (ii) save all submissions to the Turnitin database to protect future submissions to similar assignments:

  • You could create a new Turnitin-enabled assignment, and in the Turnitin Plagiarism Plugin settings set the “Store student papers” setting to “Standard repository”. Then either:
    1. have students re-upload to a visible assignment: ask students to download their submissions from the old assignment and re-upload them to the new one. If you are very concerned about assignment security, you could perhaps do this in controlled conditions (i.e., make the new assignment visible in class time and ask students to re-upload with no prior warning). You could also use the “compare documents” feature in the “review” tab of Microsoft word to check that the text of assignments have not been modified since the initial submission.
    2. re-upload submissions yourself to a hidden assignment: under “Common Module settings” set the assignment visibility to “Hidden”, under “Submission Types” set “Maximum number of uploaded files” to the maximum value of 20 files. You can then temporarily switch your own Moodle role to “student”, and upload the students’ submissions in batches of 20 as needed. Future assignment submitted to Turnitin will be matched to these submissions, but they will match to your account.

Case #2 – You need to see a Turnitin reports or use the GradeMark feature for some or all submissions BUT (ii) you do NOT want to save the submissions to the Turnitin database:

  • Set up the assignment as follows: under “Common Module settings” set the assignment visibility to “Hidden”, under “Turnitin Plagiarism Plugin” set the “Store student papers” setting to “No repository”, and under “Submission Types” set “Maximum number of uploaded files” to the maximum value of 20 files. You can then temporarily switch your own Moodle role to “student”, and upload the students’ submissions in batches of up to 20 as needed. You should probably delete the submissions from your account once you have viewed the Turnitin report. Bear in mind that this option will not protect future similar assignments submitted to Turnitin.
